Minister of Manure

It was in those sacred hours of early-morning quietness on a day that found me in the throws of a frustrated and discouraged struggle with my spirit. (I find these times that are without interruption or distraction an ideal time for dialogue with my Maker.) On this particular occasion, I was engaged in some strong bemoaning regarding my lifetime of losses, failures, frustrations and disappointments. “Dear Father, I know that all that has occurred in my life has a purpose. I, as You see clearly in my heart of hearts, have complete confidence in Your control and purpose for my life. But, Father, with all due respect, I would surely appreciate some illumination on the picture of my life. It seems to me that everything in my life, every relationship, every career choice, every circumstance that this world uses to measure ‘success’ has turned to ‘dung’.” (I must note that I did not actually use the word ‘dung’ in that discussion, but I can be far more candid in my conversations with the Creator than would be proper in this text.) “So please give me some understanding of the relevance of this life of wasted effort that I have invested so much in.” Then came, by way of that distinctly clear inner Voice, His response.

“This place, known to you as your personal world, is My Garden. I manage the preparations, the plantings, the nurturing, the pruning, and the harvest. You are quite right, all of your past could well be summarized, by the unknowing, as an accumulation of ‘dung’ (He used my actual descriptive term.) But, John-Michael, if you will agree to place that pile of waste at my disposal, I will direct you to those of my special ‘plants’ in My garden that are readied by circumstance (at My direction) for nourishment. Your ‘dung’ can become very valuable ‘manure’ for beneficial use or, at your option, can remain a smelly pile of unpleasant waste. What you must be willing to accept is the reality that it may not be your role in my garden to be the prize blossom or the award winning produce. What is required of you is your willingness to be the nurturing and sustaining dispenser of the manure of your experience and insight for the production of successes in others.”

“Oh, so I am being called to the ‘Ministry of Manure’” I laughingly responded. “Quite right” He affirmed, and we laughed together. (It is a good thing to laugh with the Almighty.) And so it has been for a decade or better now. I am most content to be His designated Minister of Manure in the small patch of Life’s garden in which I live.

Accountability... For What and To Whom

Come... join me for a moment here...

and I will tell you what this matter of "“Accountability"” means to me.

I am accountable to Life for the answer to THE big question... namely "“How good a job did you do and/or are you doing at BEing John-Michael?" Not "“What titles did you hold?"” nor "“What roles did you play?"” nor "“What offices did you hold?" Not "How much?" of anything will determine the success of my short while on this earth, but "“How did you respond to and use that unique treasure and gift of your very own individual design by which you were created?"” That is the scale upon which I will be weighed day by day and through eternity. So I am compelled to respond, without reservation, to each opportunity served to me each day in the knowledge that all things are under the control of the Creator of it all and my opportunities each have a purpose. And I do not want to disappoint myself... deprive that person... or lessen the value of that experience by withholding any part of ME from each moment.

For example, there was the occasion when I pulled over to the curb and exchanged salutations with the lady who was walking her dog in the early-morning, before-preparation-for-work, pre-dawn stillness. (This is the time that folks are accustomed to seeing the newspaper delivery guy [me] who has been there every day for the past fifteen years.) We shared comments about now-forgotten things, and then (in response to the urging of my "Still, Small, Inner Voice") I said something like "Please forgive my intrusion, but I detect in your tone, an obvious lack of enthusiasm for the job that you are engaged in."

This is the moment when LIFE rewards my courage with an affirmation that I have ventured onto "“prepared soil". The lady began to unreservedly reveal her unhappiness with both of her jobs that she felt trapped into. Like so many today, her economic requirements necessitated her working more than one job and, like many, if not most, she found no satisfaction in either of hers. I then revealed to her the possibilities available through career counseling and gave her some examples of successes that I have known personally. I explained the functions of some of the testing tools and illustrated the ways in which the test results can be translated into a satisfying and even enjoyable career.

Some months later, in response to my passing wave, she stopped me and told me that she had decided to follow through on researching options for herself. Still many months later, I saw a "‘U-Haul"’ trailer in the street with several people engaged in the never-enviable task of moving-day labor. To my surprise, the lady flagged me down (I didn'’t even know that she lived there) and announced "“I took your advice. As a result of the testing and counseling that I pursued, I am (as you can plainly see) moving to a new location to begin a new career that is the fulfillment of my dreams. Thank you for your advice. You gave me hope and a plan"

I went my way and she hers without even knowing each other's names. All that matters is that I gave Life an opportunity to let that young lady know that there was a waiting and ready potential for something special for her life. And all that was required of me was the willingness to allow Life to use the experience and knowledge acquired over my personal walk and offer it to this person who was ready for it and receptive to it. Her life was transformed... and I am forever blessed.

So, you see, My Dear Friend, willingness, availability, and receptiveness are the only requirements for us to be of immediate and tangible service to that world that is all around each of us... moment by moment, through each day that is given to us. And in the participation in these opportunities, we can make our world a bit better... person by person, experience by experience... you and I , living in love can change life for the better.

I invite you to be bold, open, and alive in the moments of your life. And, as we look into each of our personal, intimate, and private "“mirrors" of reflection, we can know that we have responded appropriately to those gifts presented to us by Life... those fleeting opportunities that were given to us... that we responded to Life'’s summons to BE that unique individual that was needed in that fleeting moment. And that we embraced our personal calling for or own Accountability... to ourselves... to that other soul... and to Life.

Please trust me... it'’s great fun!

The Creation of Evil

I present here, for your consideration, one of those well-traveled texts that occasionally visit us in our e-mail in-box. This one is worthy of note and attention (the fact that the subject of the story is one of my favorite historical characters probably colours my perspective.) Nonetheless, I hope that you glean whatever is in the piece for you.
_____________________________

A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question.

"Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that faith in the inherent goodness of God was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact, sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.

Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat. And all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature.

Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong, sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it.

How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man's name -- Albert Einstein

Making Love to Life

A dear Friend, Ray, an elderly gentleman who I noticed as he walked silently by (week after week… going about his business in a dignified, stately, and private manner), made an impression on my Spirit, with the beauty of his Spirit. “Please forgive my intrusion, My Friend” I said with a hand raised as a ‘please stop’ gesture, “but I am compelled to tell you that your eyes, your comportment, the very countenance of you, all speak together to say that the man behind all is a man of worthy and noble character. I want you to know that your regular passing of this spot where I sit has blessed me and made my world a better place for your presence in it.”

Ray, a very shy and introverted man, blushed with this extremely out-of –the-ordinary declaration and thanked me. “You are quite welcome” was my simple reply and I immediately returned my attention to the work that was before me so that he would feel no requirement for further engagement. This “sense it, say it, leave it” (my words…not his) methodology was gleaned from the teachings of Leo Buscaglia, a Teacher, Lecturer, and Motivator of the mid-to-late 1900’s. The key elements, as taught by him, were to ask, and by the asking make clear your respect for and appreciation of the ‘space’ of the other, for “forgiveness for the intrusion.” Then, after your message has been stated, remove yourself straightway to make clear the absence of any hidden agenda, thereby giving a complete sense of safety to the individual upon whom you have just intruded.

Ray and I, over time, became quite good Friends. And it was on one of our more lengthy visits (which with Ray were hardly more than fifteen minutes… for him constituting something of a marathon of dialog) that he and I had the following exchange. “John-Michael, I have to tell you that I envy the frequent and varied relationships that you seem to enjoy. I am so shy and retiring that I could never be as open and free with myself as you are. It is clear that you do genuinely love all of these people with whom I see you interacting and they, you, in return. That is something that I must say that I do envy.” “Ray, My Dear Friend, I make love to all of the world around me every moment of every day. But, Ray, You speak of the glory and warmth of your relationship with your wife who you clearly adore and by your comments, make clear, to any observer, the fact that she participates equally in her adoration of you. You go home, after witnessing my daily love-fest with life, to her and immerse yourself in the totality of that love. I go home alone. Ray… I envy you.”

“Making love to life” is the most accurate portrayal of my living. The intimate engagement in the most compelling of life’s elements… the core of life (for want of a better term)… is the level at which I sense, acknowledge, and respond to my world. I take no notice of roles or titles for I have played many roles in business, religion, society, and family… and have done so wearing the many varied ‘hats’ appropriate to the roles (and did it all quite well and even to the laudation of each relevant world). And, in the doing, I learned the temporal nature of such things… passing; for the moment; and then to be gone as though never there. But love, whether revealed in unspoken, distant appreciation or intimate exchange for the briefest or more prolonged engagement… is forever.

I am simultaneously saddened and challenged by the climate of today’s social, political, religious, and cultural atmosphere. Anger, vehemence, criticism, castigation, condemnation, confrontation, and refusal to respect, appreciate, or even consider the perspective of another is the comfortably accepted norm. I simply cannot participate in (what I consider) this sickness. The twisting of the soul of a participant is the price-tag for involvement that I would rescue all within my domain from paying. I have chosen to demonstrate the satisfactions, joys, happiness, and comfort of embracing others in the exercise of admiration, recognition, appreciation, adulation, and yes, even love.

This choice of behavior is not without pitfalls. I have found no models after which I may follow. There are, to my knowledge, no systems for the practice of such behavior that would have all potential misunderstandings and miscues worked out. I find myself blazing a new trail with all of the elements of risk and even danger befitting such an adventure. But the quest is far and away worth the scrapes and bruises encountered along the way. I can endure the passing looks of skepticism, doubt, uncertainty, and even rejection encountered with extreme rarity amongst the more frequent and almost constant smiles of appreciation, satisfaction, enjoyment, and even surprised delight that my behavior evokes. This is “making love to my world” as I am called by the conviction of my heart to practice it.

Some Illumination on "Insignificance"

When I become Insignificant to my Significant Other,

I begin to shift focus away from him/her...

To some-one or some-thing where I will find

Validation to suit my need for significance.

Which raises the question: Have you shifted your focus to friends, hobby, Lover, social or religious activity as a chosen source for the validation of your significance?

"Everything" and Meanings

"Daddy... does everything have to mean something?" (My daughter 1990)

"“God did not create the universe to operate at the roll of the dice." (Albert Einstein)

The Point: Everything has meaning and a controlled purpose. Nothing is meaningless.

And to miss that point... to not hear that message... not see the reason... is a choice (with its own inherent set of reasons.)

My quest is, and always has been, to understand the "Why?"s of all of it.
Finding a comfort zone that allows freedom of mind and spirit...
Embracing all that Life offers with an acceptance born of respect...
Respect for the circumstance, the individual, the ideology, the agreeable
(and disagreeable.)

Discriminating with a basis in personal choice... for myself...
while not prescribing for others.
Having the courage to present and support those choices in the face of adversarial conflict.
Seeing meanings inherent to everything with honor, and even reverence,
for all in creations context.

This is my life's moment-by-moment intent.

Just BEing ME

Let’s talk about this business of BEING or DOING for a moment.

When my psychologist/friend pointed out what I summarized as becoming “a human being” whereas I had, previously, been a “human doing,” I was immediately aware of a significant shift in my perspective on life. From that exact moment, my life embarked on a new path. I became determined to discover the exact clinical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional make-up of ME. This determination was founded on my conviction that I could only measure my state of being against my true potentials to "be" if I had a clear and unambiguous definition of my natural, Life-given potentials.

I reflected back to the time when I discovered the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (a tool that has helped millions to evaluate their personal gifts and abilities) and the great help that it offered a friend in her determining options for a well-suited career choice. This was the starting place for my self-diagnostic journey… to pull back the curtain on the true nature of ME. Fortunately, I found a number of resource materials and guidance from a wide array of literature, tapes, seminars, tests, and counselors. All of this “input” was digested and clarified through the infinite guidance of my quiet, gentle, inner voice.

As my capacity to be became, gradually, clear to me, my ability to be
myself with confidence developed and I became more and more comfortable with myself. This was, and continues to be, huge in its overall life implications. I can now permit myself to be romantic without hearing the oft-repeated voices from my past with their belittling charges that I was being a “dreamer” or “unreal.” Well, guess what I discovered… the defined yearning of those of my temperament is for romance. How about that! It is perfectly normal and to be expected that I live with a constant yearning for romance. I further learned that of the sixteen specific temperament types, those of my type make up only one percent of the population. Wow! Now I know why so few people in my world are comfortable with the unique way that I see life. It is because we are different! I can, now, accept the perception of others that I am “weird” (inasmuch as the vast majority of the population sees life through a ‘lens’ altogether contrary to the ‘lenses’ that define my view) as well as salving my own frustrations with the parameters of my individuality. Not bad, huh? So, when I become aware of your responses to the elements in your life, I now recognize the reality that you, first, are “seeing” those elements differently from the way that I see them and, secondly, are dealing with them with your own set of individual talents and abilities. You are (in fact) being you. That is, of course, unless you are doing those things that define your outer behavior as a result of the pressures of illegitimate expectations. Herein lies the “doing trap.”

When an old high school girlfriend, who had become, in her adult life, a clinical psychologist visited me (to, as it turned out, tell me “Goodbye“ [she later succumbed to cancer]), she asked me a wonderful question. She wanted to know what it had cost me to transition from doing to being. The question gave me a moment of pause and reflection before I easily responded “Nothing.” Now I understand that you will see that response as improbable for a variety of reasons. Surely, you would offer, there were consequences, impacts created in lives and circumstances… costs of some sort. No, my friend, none at all… if you listen, again, to the question. What was the cost to ME? And you can see that my response had to be what it was. “It cost ME nothing inasmuch as I was not “BEing” involved in the “DOing” part of my life.” The person known to my world as me was merely on a variety of situational stages performing the roles dictated by the expectations of the audience in attendance as I hoped that my performance would satisfy the needs of those for whom I performed. I was the one who (when the audience was gone) sat alone in my office, or in the restaurant, or the car, or plane, or at night on the sofa after my children had been tucked in and jiggled to sleep, and wept the tears of aching loneliness. Lonely in the absence of anyone (including myself) who even knew who I was. I was in a state of doing all of the things expected of me, by me, and by everyone else in my world who had no clue as to who I might be.

I, therefore, write to you, dear Reader, to encourage you to begin to BE. To begin to know the satisfaction of being intimate as opposed to doing intimate things and being left, after the fact, with that hollow feeling of (as the old song said it so well) “Is that all there is?” To be accepting of and embrace those pesky particulars and circumstances all around you, as opposed to doing the things on your “to do” list as you desensitize yourself to your environment in the never-realized hope of achieving some measure of control over that environment. Perhaps you might augment that list with a “to be” list. Just consider listing: #1 be loving (first, of who you are); #2 be caring (first, for who you are); #3 be _________(fill in your desired quality or value.)

A handy checkpoint for perspective is the “Could I hire someone to do this…or can it be accomplished by only me?” question. The answer will tell me how replaceable I am in this circumstance. If automation or delegation can meet the “need” perhaps I can best be me in the application of myself somewhere else. And in that “some other place” fulfilling the honest role of ME, I can instant by instant, opportunity by opportunity, life moment by life moment, know the eternally and internally rewarding satisfaction of living out the promises inherent to the only ME to ever BE.

I bid you well in your BEing.

Rum-Raisin Ice Cream

I do not like Rum-raisin Ice-cream.

There, I’ve said it.

There is nothing more to say on the matter (yet you and I know that there will, most assuredly, be more said.)

You see, Dear Friend, I do not begrudge anyone else their preference for Rum-raisin Ice-cream. I hold no grudge against that flavor. There resides no bitterness in my soul toward the combination of elements that constitute that particular blend. I would never counsel anyone to disallow themselves the opportunity to sample that product nor would I undertake to undermine that dessert’s place in the universe of food products.

It is, quite simply, a fact that my own, personal, individual, particular, unique taste buds do not enjoy Rum-raisin Ice-cream. And that is perfectly all right for there are myriad other choices offering themselves for my delight.

Yet... when my Friend of many years informed me, today, that she is hesitant to allow herself to openly and publicly be my friend because of her children’s reservations about me, I was disappointed. My big old twenty stone (sounds so much better than the equivalent in pounds) of feelings got themselves hurt. Why? Because... (here is where I identify with Rum-Raisin Ice Cream)... I am who I am. She doesn’t understand why I can’t mitigate myself to accommodate the sensitivities of her children. “Aren’t you denying them the opportunity to know you by insisting on Being you?” she asked. “Why can’t you soften up your presentation of yourself?” “They think that you are being ‘phony’ because you come on too strong.”

But who will they know if I present another image to them? Will the presentation of a ‘moderated’ me be an honest portrayal? Yet my friend persisted in the idea that we must ‘respect’ other people’s ‘space’ by adopting behavior that accommodates their sensitivities.

I lived the first four decades of my life in the daily practice of ‘accommodation.’ I was never relaxed. Every encounter was a ‘performance’ for the benefit and to gain the acceptance of my ‘audience.’ Consequently, no one (including myself) knew me. I had no intimate relationships. There existed no place where I could go to, firstly, know who I was and, secondly, to be that person in comfort. The accepted social norm was that this was (and is) proper. I reject that norm (for myself.) I also embrace the consequences resulting from that rejection. One of those consequences is the reality that I will be (and am) sometimes rejected as a person. That too is absolutely OK. For my Dear Reader, Rum-raisin Ice-cream is not for everyone. But it is there for the individuals who have a preference for it. And the Friendships that I now enjoy I enjoy without reservation, in all of the intimate, passionate, and exuberant freedom that is ME.

Thank God for selections to choose from (for they (we) are, after all, His creations.)

And I am John-Michael [who are you?] (Thursday, 29 July 2004)

Art Appreciation and Sewage Disposal

  Posted by Picasa

The incongruous union of the titled subjects is a fit parallel to the ethereal notion of love and the physical abstraction of desire. It is my contention that the element of desire is but a natural impulse to physical reproduction while love is of the spirit and, inasmuch as the spirit has no need to reproduce, the impulse to love is free of gender specificity. Where my body may respond to the physical attributes of one of a given sex, my soul responds to the incorporeal aspects of one'’s spirit exclusive of gender consideration. The two worlds of cognition are as disassociated as the titled "“Art and Sewage." One addresses the non-material transcendence of the inner self while the other relates to the consideration of an all-too-real life necessity. Neither is of greater or lesser value in the balanced estimation of life, as we know it, and both are worthy of individual attention.

The limitations of the physical/material world are, inherently, visited upon the relationship that pivots on them. Decay and decline are the inevitable companions of all that is of "‘the flesh" and will be mirrored in the union that is bound by those material and/or physical attributes. That is... as all of those physical elements that fascinated, intrigued, excited, and stimulated are affected by the passage of time, those who have based their affections on those changing properties will become acutely aware of the evolution (or, more to the point... devolution) of their interest. Where the relationship is borne of the spirit... in response to the mystical and intangible qualities of the adored one... it seems to me that that relationship grows with the development of new and refined aspects of that admired spirit. The "gift wrapping"’ fades in significance while the dynamics of the evolving "‘gift" give birth to new levels of appreciation.

With this said, I can surmise that I can love beyond gender limitations, and experience sexual gratification and satisfaction within separately defined boundaries. Restated; I can (A) love without bounds and (B) celebrate sex within my own individually determined discriminations and preference. Simply stated (I know... Finally!) I can freely love "He"s and "She"s exclusive of and apart from any physical expression, intention, inclination, or realization while, separately and independently, indulging my physical passions for the natural focus of my personal desires. And where the twain meet... Oh my!

So, Dear Friend, when I exercise my sense of freedom to let you know that "“I love you", you can relax and be comfortable in the knowledge that what I am expressing has no sexual context (unless I make quite clear a contrary intent.) Acknowledging and celebrating the joy of being "in love" with your personhood... your unique identity comprised of all that is your temperament, intellect, spirit, and even soul... is completely asexual and the greatest pleasure that this life affords me. And I live each moment in respectful appreciation of the gift of loving.

It is my hope and intention that this little discussion will introduce some new vocabulary into our transactional thought and behavioral processes, freeing us to be more at ease with and responsive to each other in our appreciation of the transcendent "Art"“ that is the eternal essence of who we are. For, don't you know... I love you.

Life With Tears

  Posted by Picasa

“Dad…Why do you always cry? You cry when you are happy and you cry when you are sad. Why?”

I knew that this was one of those rare moments when my concrete thinking daughter was open to an insight that could have long-lasting consequences in the development of her ability to relate to her feelings. I had best be brief, succinct, and accurate. “Please God” I silently prayed.

I cry because I allow myself to feel… and tears are an important part of the feeling system. You see, Sweetheart, we were created with our hearts capable of feeling both joy and sadness. But our hearts can’t contain too much of either. So…we have a safety system that keeps our hearts from breaking if we feel too much of either sadness or joy. The extra comes out as tears. They can be happy tears or sad tears. But they both come out so that our hearts don’t have too much of either to hold. Because I permit myself to feel a lot… I have a lot of extra.”

Those with whom I have shared the first part of my emerging book 'Why I Am Here and You Are There', will know that I live my life in response to the leading of “The Master Gardener” as my “Still Small” inner voice speaks to my heart. Today I awoke with the recollection of the dialogue (with my daughter) that I just shared with you and an acute sense that there is someone, some “plant” in the “Master Gardener’s” care that is in need of the nurturing benefit of this little message of encouragement. In my capacity of “Minister of Manure” I am compelled, by previous commitment to the Master, to spread some of the “compost” of my past experience where preparation has been made and a receptive heart is readied. So, My Friend, whoever and wherever you are, here is the answer to your petition.

Go ahead… it is OK… allow yourself to feel… to embrace…to experience… to savor life as it is being presented to you at this very moment. Your heart will not break… tears will protect it from the hazard of too much (and the garden all around you will benefit from the watering of the excess of your courageous participation in the adventure at hand.) Live life… all of it…saving it is not an option… invest YOURSELF in living. And if tears are the result… let all (your children, your family, your friends) know that the tears are from a heart overflowing with the excess of living life.

'Tis Friday

  Posted by Picasa

Yes, ‘tis Friday. We have put together all of the elements of another week in the construction of this edifice that is to be defined as “Our Life.” An appropriate time to sit back and allow the words of my favorite poet to guide our reflections on what we have accomplished through our application of talents in the space of the past few days. I give you, in Love, “The Builders.”

The Builders

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

All are architects of fate,
Working in these walls of time;
Some with massive deeds and great,
Some with ornaments of rhyme.

Nothing useless is, or low;
Each thing in its place is best;
And what seems but idle show
Strengthens and supports the rest.

For the structure that we raise,
Time is with materials filled;
Our todays and yesterdays
Are the blocks with which we build.

Truly shape and fashion these;
Leave no yawning gaps between;
Think not, because no man sees,
Such things will remain unseen.

In the elder days of Art,
Builders wrought with greatest care
Each minute and unseen part;
For the gods see everywhere.

Let us do our work as well,
Both the unseen and the seen;
Make the house where gods may dwell
Beautiful, entire, and clean.

Else our lives are incomplete,
Standing in these walls of Time,
Broken stairways, where the feet
Stumble, as they seek to climb.

Build today, then, strong and sure,
With a firm and ample base;
And ascending and secure
Shall tomorrow find its place.

Thus alone can we attain
To those turret, where the eye
Sees the world as one vast plain,
And one boundless reach of sky.

"Un-Nichable"

  Posted by Picasa

I have always had a ‘macro’ awareness… the ‘micro’ stuff of this world is something that I have had little patience with. My constant perception has been in the eternal… the spiritual… the idealistic. Those aspects of daily life dealing with the details of routine and ordinary material business are but fleetingly temporary in my estimation… while spiritual matters involving attitudes, motives, spirit and intent have the quality of permanence to me.

The lessons of scripture (drilled into me from my earliest recollection... and validated by extensive experience) have been more ‘real’ to me than the axioms of this physical world. I now understand my predisposition, by virtue of my innate temperament/personality type, to the idealistic, spatial, and conceptual elements of our existence. The overriding government of all that we are aware of (as well as those things that we have but a hint of) by a guiding and controlling Power has been my central certainty and core conviction.

I have acknowledged and communicated with this Power (with the identity of Lord, God, and Father) all with equal comfort. But I acknowledge the validity of the nomenclature of other faith groups, cultures, and practices that know the same Power by names and identities harmonious with their histories, cultures, and traditions.

The transcending authority of that Power has vested me with a patient tolerance of the inept (at best) or criminal (at worst) government of this thing that we know as ‘time and space’ (our world) with all of its abuses of and disrespect for the diverse customs, politics, faith, and individualities of others. But I do not enjoy living in such unkind environs.

Given these perspectives and predisposed convictions, finding a niche into which I might fit comfortably is an ongoing challenge. I think myself, rather, to be… infinitely and eternally… ‘Un-Nichable.’

We Need To Talk

  Posted by Picasa

It is in the moment created by some extraordinary circumstance that we are presented with the opportunity to make dramatic change in our lives.

“Where are their fathers?” I asked of the director of the United Cerebral Palsy Center. “Oh, they frequently say that they ‘just can’t deal with the situation’ and leave“ he replied. I learned, then, that not everyone commits to change when immovable or uncompromisable circumstances present themselves. Some choose to simply ‘run for the hills.’

I know well the grip of fear when life declares, through that uncompromisable circumstance, “WE NEED TO TALK!” The “need to talk” imperative is never a welcome one whether presented by our unavoidable inner voice (our conscience, or soul-voice) or the challenging voice of another. The message is always the same “you must consider something different and/or acknowledge present insufficiencies.” and none of us eagerly embrace either insufficiencies or change. It has been well said by some ancient “It is easier for man to accept the miseries of a poor life than for him to confront the fears of change” and I can affirm that truth from my own struggling experience. Hence I am writing to let you know that the beginning point for my venture into my tomorrows was to take an isolated moment with myself and say, “WE NEED TO TALK.” (I then refused the impulse to run for the hills.)

Talking with one’s inner self requires both asking and listening (with patience) for answers. “As a man thinketh… so is he” came to my awareness. Please make note here… it is not what he thinks, not a matter of quantity… but HOW he thinks… with what qualities. That is, in other terms “where my thinking was coming from” or what my motivations were. We are not talking about “goals” or “dreams” here, but instead, the “music” behind the “lyrics” of our thoughts, the “core” of us. If our intentions are self-serving then they must be acknowledged to be just exactly that without the prejudice of any possible outside perspectives. If the mind-set of “I am looking out for what will serve my best interests” is what you choose to drive your voice, then have the courage to say so to yourself and to the world around you. This “sit-down” is just with yourself and no outside valuation is appropriate. If your intentions are ridiculously altruistic, then that should be the set foundation for a confidence in the thinking’s value and worth. Remember… As you think, so you are. It is in this mode that you will find yourself thinking things that, heretofore, you have never thought (perhaps for fear of judgment, mockery, or rejection.) In my case, I became aware of a voice that was not familiar… a spiritual (though, most definitely, not “religious”) voice that expressed thoughts beyond those to which I was accustomed.

I found comfort in the knowledge that all of the world’s cultures have been aware, from earliest time, of an influence that shades our thinking. We have identified this influence as “higher” or “lower”, as light/dark, evil/good, positive/negative, yen/yang, etc… How often have we heard the well worn “you see the glass half-empty/half’-full” label for our thinking or predisposition? Such is the “music” to which I refer when I make mention of the foundation of all of our thinking. This is, most definitely, NOT a matter of attitude or whimsical mood. This is the “Spiritual bent” that guides our thought processes, the “He seems to see the potential for good in every situation” kind of Spirit versus the “You can be sure that he will find something to complain about.” mode. The “Well, you may not know what his decision will be, but you can be sure that it will be based on ____ “ (and you can fill in the blank with the character trait that you are certain will drive that choice to be made by him.)

Herein lies the “As he thinks” mechanism. There is NOTHING else in our complete control in this life. In this and only this can we exercise complete sway … the spirit to which we trust all of the processing of our thought. We actively choose the “As” of our thinking. Our basic ability to think may be impaired or even enhanced by Life’s touch, but regardless of our capacity for mental function, we all (with some clinical exceptions) maintain moment-by-moment control of our willingness to surrender our thoughts to a greater or lesser, bitter or better, higher or lower Influence. This is the ultimate power of our will.

I recall an old story that illustrates this principal to my satisfaction. It seems that an old man was visiting with his guru for the purpose of learning, further, how to discipline his thinking. “It is like there are two dogs fighting over control of my mind” the old man offered, “the dog of anger pulls one way while the dog of peace pulls the other.” “And which dog wins the battle?” asked the guru. “The one that I say ‘sic-em’ to” answered the man. You do, of course, see my point. The “dogs” of influence and guiding perspective will ALWAYS be there, vying for dominance over the “musical soundtrack” accompanying our thought processes. The choice of music is constantly in our control… soothing/clashing, harmonious/discordant, uplifting/downgrading, … etc., etc. We, though, have the one and only deciding vote to determine which voice is told to “sic”, or take dominance over, the other.

My focus in this reflection is, therefore, on creating a beneficial setting for a comfortable and mutually respectful exchange of insights. A setting that will serve as a stage for a harmonious intercourse as opposed to an arena or field of battle, first within ourselves, and then with the world around us. I should note that it is also critical to recognize the kind of “music” accompanying the messages offered by those with whom we hope to achieve a harmonious exchange. Which dog is in control of each of your spirits? Can you imagine anything more pleasant than two people meeting with a spirit of generosity motivating both of them? “I want to be more generous than you.” “No, no, please allow me to be more generous than you.” The possibilities boggle the mind but reality is, most often, quite different. The point of beginning is, however, the same for us all… LISTENING to the “music“ of our own spiritual soundtrack. And then deciding… actively and responsibly… how we want to “orchestrate “ all of our tomorrows.

Sharing Smiles over the Miles

  Posted by Picasa

I do love stories of human beings engaging each other in respectful...but irreverent social intercourse. Here I share a lovely piece that was echoed through "The Net" but may have missed you...and the delightful chuckles to be gleaned from it are simply too precious to pass by, So, Dear Reader, without knowing the identity of its author and not attesting to its authenticity, I give you this moment...To smile.

In case you need a laugh: Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane but only a high school diploma to fix one.

After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P [Problem]) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S [Solution]) by maintenance engineers.

By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.

--------------

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.
