Shapes of Passing "Clouds"

“Oh… Look, can’t you see…and now, the way that it is changing, there is clearly…” and thus the excited and animated discussion would go on between myself, as a young lad, and whomever my youthful companion for the moment was, as we would lie next to one another in the summer grass and contemplate what we each perceived in the shapes of passing clouds.

And now, today I hear fractious groups, sects, denominations, political persuasions, social and cultural clans, all demanding that those of other identities “see” the definition that they perceive in the shapes of events and circumstances in our shared world. And those circumstances and events change with the same certainty and dynamic as those clouds that we as youngsters passed the time of our lives watching and wondering about. We never became angry when our perceived definition of a particular shape did not echo the identity seen by our companion. Certainly not! We were enjoying the experience of sharing a moment of life together in the knowledge that those clouds that occupied our attention… would constantly change into something else… and our creative energies would be challenged by a new vision.

Is it so very different in our world’s circumstances today? Can we not manage to respect each other’s interpretation of the elements of today’s set of realities in the understanding that in the very dynamic of life’s nature, all of those elements under our consideration will quickly change into new “shapes” with the winds of time. Are we so sophisticated and “mature” that we can not reclaim the innocence of youth’s ability to accept, adapt, agree to disagree, and even… could it be possible… laugh together at our petty differences.

I know… I am being simplistic… unrealistic… heaven forbid!, even idealistic. But does not retrospect, history, and reflection teach us that all of those “clouds” that we thought to be of such consequence in our yesterdays' considerations, have, in fact, passed into simple, elementary, and even often inconsequentially small matters in the scheme of life? Have we not learned with the passage of time, that many of those lost friendships, alienated neighbors, estranged family members, opponents in war, and adversaries in arguments could have been maintained as integral parts of a more complete and less fractured Us if only we had been able to respect their alternative perspective as being legitimate… now that those “clouds” of that past moment have been blown away by time?

I aspire to a life of enthusiastic, inquisitive, and loving participation in each day’s offered opportunities… with you… the soul and spirit that joins with me in this ideal. And we will, together, change our own personal world one little bit each day. You watch. You wait. You will see. “Oh look… the clouds in our shared sky are changing shape yet again… and again…”

My Personal Message to Tati

Hello Tati (I would love to know your full name),

I know that this has taken what seems to be an absurdly long time in coming. Don’t feel bad. My youngest daughter (now 28 yrs old) once asked me a life-shaping question that took me 1 ½ years to work out an answer to. By the time that I had an answer for her … she dismissed me with her “It’s too late now! I don’t care any more.” (Perhaps others can someday benefit from what I learned in that attempt to help her.)

I am a ‘conceptual’ thinker, and have to shape and form an ‘image’ of a thought in order to communicate it. This is defined by educators as a ‘learning handicap’ … I just accept it as my unique way of thinking. And, as you have no doubt noted, I am what is called ‘emotion driven.’ So when I read your blog post with your distinct pleas for some clarity on matters of great significance, you tipped my emotional canoe over with the weight of all that I saw in your message. So … it has taken this length of time to ‘conceptualize’ what I want to offer you … and a whole lot of effort to get past the enormity of my emotional overload attached to my affection and respect for you and your concerns. I tell you all of this not only to help you understand why it has taken me ‘til now to write. But also to illustrate part of what hope I can help you discover.

You see, My Dear Friend, I have come to a very clear and distinct understanding of and working knowledge of my Self. How I function, how I take in and process information and stimuli, and how I respond and communicate. This has taken many years and much study and counseling (which provided only the sketchiest and most rudimentary of information … but did give me a good sounding board for working out what I discovered on my own.) When I read your 24 March post, it triggered 30 years of stored emotion and empathy. For, you see, I was struggling with precisely the same emotions and sorts of thoughts that plague you now … back then. So, My Darling Tati, I am making an attempt at condensing more than 30 years of discovery and integration of concepts and ideas … into this brief (though it may seem anything but brief) message for you.

When Matthew was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, I was confronted with the challenge of a lifetime. I had lived, prior to that, as the Jerry Lewis/ Red Skelton ‘make everybody happy and feel better about their circumstance’ guy in my world. My (yet undiscovered) temperament/personality limitations and constraints made dealing with life’s details and picky particulars too stressful and mentally difficult for me to have any appetite for. So I married someone who delights in detail, control, and management. I was then free to be the happy “feel good” guy. Matthew needed far more than that. And I was elected (by default.) So I had to confront a whole universe of dilemmas and questions just like the ones that you are asking. The big “What’ the hell is it all about, how can I make a success out of my part in whatever this life thingy is about, and is it ever going to be possible for me to realize any comfort and/or fun out of living it???” questions.

So I started searching … all alone … without guidance (for there was no one to whom I could turn … family and friends simply did not have what I needed.) I haunted bookstores … read a whole library of ‘stuff’ … dealt with several counselors (a waste of time and $$$) … listened to tapes and watched videos … in general, worked my ass off in an effort to develop my Self into … ???? (did not know who or what I wanted, or needed to be.)

All that background … now you …! I am going to jump into that initial “who do I want to be?” deal. Here’s the cliffs notes, handy dandy guide to that. Go shopping! Look around at EVERYONE who you like … ask yourself “what is it about them that I like?” And listen to your knee-jerk response. There is some trait … some characteristic … that you find pleasing in that individual. Identify it. Name it. Jot it down with an unspoken “that is just so cool! I really like that! I would someday like to see that in my Self!”… And at that point you have begun writing your own individual, unique, and personal Life-Script. For it is a well documented fact that we all live out a Script that we carry around in our sub-conscious mind. That script is written for us by an accumulation of contributors that include every voice that has ever impacted our self-image from birth to present. What you can do (I have [happily] done it myself) is compile and incorporate every characteristic that you find attractive in others … and write a new role for your life-script. Then replace that old worn out role that was written for you by others … with your new and self-designed one. This is the whole basis for an entire school of psychiatry and psychology that goes by the title of “Behavior Modification.”

Now, to make this new role in this new script a comfortable and enjoyable one. Find out what your natural and instinctive core traits are. Visit the Keirsey and Personality Page links on the side-bar of my blog, and take the quizzes. This will (trust me … it is a helpful tool) equip you to take manageable charge of your innate assets. You can, then, meld these characteristics into your new ‘role elements.’ This will also give you a healthy insight into the elements of life that make you happy, give you joy, and satisfy your desires. A really neat thing to identify, label, tag, and be aware of. (we do NOT all share common traits in these considerations.)

Now, to Vocabulary! I know that you are unaware of it … but you used the word “should” six times I your post. All related to what you SHOULD be thinking, feeling, or feeling. Here I will offer you a priceless new discipline. Eliminate, void, delete, erase, forbid, deny, eradicate, (starting to see a trend here? [smile]) ALL use of the following words from your self-talk and active vocabulary … should mustneed tohave toought togot to had better … etc. These words are a trap into slavery. They entrap you in a constructive mental and emotional slavery to all manner of expectation traps. They (by even thinking them) cause your blood pressure to rise … muscles to contract … blood vessels to constrict … adrenaline to be released (a toxin that damages all internal organs), and stress levels to spike. Just test them. Say those words and allow yourself to Feel your body’s immediate response. Notice the tension at your use of any of those destructive terms. Now try implementing “want to” … “would like to” … “will enjoy” … “will be happy to” … “would be interesting to” … etc. Did you notice how your entire Person relaxes with the use of this vocabulary. It puts You in control. Makes You responsible. Gives You the authority. And takes all of that away from some demanding, commanding, disrespectful, insatiable, unappreciative … Unknown Power God of Expectations.

Tati, my Dearest, I think that I may have overstayed my welcome with all of that. So I will quit while I am behind [grin]. Please know that I am yours to call upon at any time. If you like, I will give you my phone number and you will be welcome to do as those for whom I do Life Coaching, and call. Just send an Email, and I will give that to you.

I love all that is “Who you Are.” And am honored to be able to offer these “introductory” concepts to you.

NAMASTE

Aristotle On FRIENDSHIP

From: The Nicomachean Ethics

The ancients listed friendship among the highest of virtues. It was an essential element in the fully flourishing life. “For without friends,” Aristotle says, “no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods.” Words worth remembering in a world of perishable “goods.”

According to Aristotle, friendship either is, or it involves, a state of character, a virtue. There are three kinds of friendship. These are based on pleasure in another’s company (friendships of pleasure), or on usefulness in association (friendships of utility), or on mutual admiration (friendships in virtue). All are essential to the good life, and the best sorts of friends will not only admire each other’s excellence but take pleasure in each other’s company and find their association of mutual advantage. Here is a portion of Aristotle’s classic discussion.

________________________________________

As the motives to friendship differ in kind, so do the respective feelings and Friendships. The species then of Friendship are three, in number equal to the objects of it, since in the line of each there may be “mutual affection mutually known.”

Now they who have Friendship for one another desire one another’s good according to the motive of their Friendship; accordingly, they whose motive is utility have no Friendship for one another really, but only insofar as some good arises to them from one another.

And they whose motive is pleasure are in like case: I mean, they have Friendship for men of easy pleasantry, not because they are of a given character but because they are pleasant to themselves. So then, they whose motive to Friendship is utility love their friends for what is good to themselves; they whose motive is pleasure do so for what is pleasurable to themselves; that is to say, not insofar as the friend beloved is but insofar as he is useful or pleasurable. These Friendships are a matter of result; since the object is not beloved in that he is the man he is but in that he furnishes advantage or pleasure as the case may be.

Such Friendships are, of course, very liable to dissolution if the parties do not continue alike: I mean, that the others cease to have any Friendship for them when they are no longer pleasurable or useful. Now it is the nature of both pleasure and utility not to be permanent, but constantly varying: so, of course, when the motive which made them friends is vanished, the Friendship likewise dissolves; since it existed only relatively to those circumstances…

That then is perfect Friendship which subsists between those who are good and whose similarity consists in their goodness: for these wish one another’s good in similar ways; insofar as they are good (and good they are in themselves); and those are specially friends who wish good to their friends for their sakes, because they feel thus toward them on their own account and not as a mere matter of result; so the Friendship between these men continues to subsist so long as they are good; and goodness, we know, has a principle of permanence….

Rare it is probable Friendships of this kind will be, because men of this kind are rare. [ Note: With regard to the matter of 'rarity', it is worthy to note that, given the definitions of values inherent to temperaments and personality styles identified by the “Myers/Briggs” method, those given to the “utility” and “pleasure” motivations make up approximately eighty-five percent of the general population.] Besides, all requisite qualifications being presupposed, there is further required time and intimacy: for, as the proverb says, men cannot know one another “till they have eaten the requisite quantity of salt together”; nor can they, in fact, admit one another to intimacy (much less be friends) till each has appeared to the other and been proved to be a fit object of Friendship. They who speedily commence an interchange of friendly actions may be said to wish to be friends, but they are not so unless they are also proper objects of Friendship and mutually known to be such: that is to say… a desire for Friendship may arise quickly but not Friendship itself.

_______________________________________

With the insights stated by Aristotle and restated countless times since then by innumerable others in various forms... it should be clear to all that we do not share the same hopes for nor desires in our friends. It is, then, my humble opinion that it might suite us better if we could celebrate the rare gifts in Friends that Life has given us; exercise the particular senses of 'taste' that satisfy our requirements for new friends; and cease condemning others for not living up to our unique expectations for qualification as "Friend." And to the tatality of the matter I say "Viva le difference!"

Who Are You?

“Who are you?” was the question thrust upon me by the challenging five year old kindergarten student as he set his back stiffly in its most erect pose. Pretty impressive stuff from a child toward a physically imposing adult male who was a total unknown to the child. Not to be channeled into his obviously well-rehearsed performance, I countered with “More to the point, (pretty cool, eh… using phraseology that was alien to the lad)… just who are you?” Now we were engaged in the stand-off. Two duelers faced with the unspoken, but clearly understood standard that ’he who gives the answer first is the loser.’ But, here I genuinely wanted to know just who this fellow was. Not just his label… his name, but who he wanted me to know him to be. We waited. Others at the service desk of the elementary school library, waited. All eyes were now fixed on the young lad. He was, quite obviously, uneasy with this turn in a game that had historically garnered for him control of those upon whom he leveled his attack. Then, into the breach came a young man (an ’advanced’ age of eight years… but clearly an ’upper-classman’ in this arena) who turned to the boy, who for convenience, I will call Robert, and said “Hey man, the guy really wants to know who you are… you know… like what kind of a person are you?” I was shouting a silent inner cheer for this interceder who so beautifully cleared the air.

“I am bad” came the reply from Robert’s not-so-defiant lips. I was stunned… silence reigned at the library counter. All… students, and staff… were stilled with this declaration from a five-year-old boy… and I knew that this was a moment of pivotal significance. Not only for Robert but for the lad who had prompted him into this announcement, the children who stood in silent recognition that this boy had made an honest, candid, and obviously painful statement of his inner perception of himself. I looked into Robert’s eyes,,, really looked… focused into him. I gave him a moment to recognize the fact that, for me, right then, in that moment there existed no one in the world but him. Then I smiled a smile of appreciation and respect and said “Wow!, You are really smart! You are making a really good joke on someone! I am impressed! You must be … like a movie actor or something. Because I am a really smart man. And I know about how people are. And I am really good at spotting good people, and bad people (I then turned to the librarian and asked her to validate the truths that I had just stated, as to my credibility… for the moment was at hand.) I can tell that you are really a very good guy… I know this… I can tell every time. So you must be making a super good joke on someone to make them think that a really good guy… is bad. I think that you must be a terrific actor.” And, My Dear Reader, I wish that I had at my disposal the ability to adequately portray the look of utter… hope… that came across Robert’s face. Here this person of a mere five years was… soundly convinced that he, a human being, just the initial sprouting of an individual… was inherently, hopelessly, and forever bad. And some big old, imposing, white-bearded man was telling him that it was but a joke… a misunderstanding… a folly. I asked him if he would do me the honor of being my friend and we exchanged names and a bit more about ourselves.

I will not drone on about the comments from teachers and counselors who later shared notes with each other about this transformed young man. He had, obviously, made some adjustment in his game and had decided to only ’fool’ others into thinking him to be bad on selective occasions. And we enjoyed seeing each other and complimenting each others’ roles when I had the weekly opportunity to read to his class in the library. But the point in this is not this isolated happening. The message, so clearly and eloquently communicated by Robert and his moment, is this. We all… every single one of us… have an inner sense of who we are. Like Robert, we have been given this “script” by otherwise loving, caring, well-intentioned (yes, I do know that I am being generous here) Significant Others throughout the course of our lives. And… we buy it. We give these people our trust, our confidence, our faith in their ’superior’ powers of judgment, and we live out the roles that they hand us.

I ask that you put yourself in the person of Robert when I asked him “Who told you that you are bad? Was it someone here at school? Or was it at home? Who did you fool into believing this joke?” and ask yourself, Dear Friend, “Who am I listening to? What qualifies that person to fix a defining label on my spirit? Why am I succumbing to this influence? Wouldn’t I enjoy taking up a script of my own choosing and playing a new role that meets my inner desires?” I do not suggest that this is as easily accomplished in the well over-rehearsed role of the more experienced adult. But I do offer the hope. And in that hope, I remain, as always, Your Friend and Servant.

It's About Time

On Wednesday of next week, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.

That won't ever happen again... (There, you see... I can do something out of spontaneous reflex without it having to have some "Deep Meaning.")

A "Feel Good" Place

I was very pleased yesterday when a friend told me that visiting my blog made him feel good. Nothing could possible be more to my liking nor give me more satisfaction than providing a place where both friends and passing strangers can have a moment of comfortable ‘feeling good.’

Reflecting on that truth, I am reminded of one of my most treasured poems. It was written by Sam Walter Foss (1858-1911) and is titled The House by the Side of the Road. I share it with you in the hope that it gives you, in the midst of whatever Monday madness you are dealing with, a moment of feeling good. And I thank you for your visit.

The House by the Side of the Road

“He was a friend to man, and he lived in a house by the side of the road.”
Homer

There are hermit souls that live withdrawn
In their place of self-content;
There are souls like stars, that dwell apart,
In a fellowless firmament;
There are pioneer souls that blaze their paths
Where highways never ran-
But let me live by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by-
The men who are good and the men who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner’s seat,
Or hurl the cynic’s ban-
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I see from my house by the side of the road,
By the side of the highway of life,
The men who press with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with the strife.
But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears,
Both parts of an infinite plan-
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead
And mountains of wearisome height;
That the road passes on through the long afternoon
And stretches away to the night.
But still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice,
And weep with the strangers that moan,
Nor live in my house by the side of the road
Like a man who dwells alone.

Let me live in my house by the side of the road-
It’s here the race of men go by.
They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong,
Wise, foolish - so am I;
Then why should I sit in the scorner’s seat,
Or hurl the cynic’s ban?
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

Size Matters

Through our innate knowledge that the truest measure of our character is the size of whatever we allow to cause us upset…
many of the Lofty are made Low…
and many Humble are known to be Great.

A Private Message To Maria

I hope that you are dealing with the "craziness" of life’s happenings … with some measure of more tranquil and peaceful comfort. (You may notice [as it has just occurred to me] that I make frequent use of the word “comfort.” This is not because of my hearing it in use around me. But because that simple and uncomplicated word carries with it some chemistry that calms my inner Spirit … each time that I refer to it. And this calming and pleasant sense is something that I want so very much to make as my gift to you.

So, My beautiful (I have the photo of you with me as I visit with you [smile]) and precious Friend …

take a moment with me (in all of my magnificent handsomeness and charm [stupid grin]), have a cup of coffee, and let’s share a still and uncomplicated few minutes together.

(Yes! This does reveal how much I want us to be together … and I am allowing it to show! [gentle smile])

I didn't mean to make u feel that I'm not opening up about what happened in my relationship... It's still too fresh and I only recently came to realise that I was in a verbally abusive relationship... And I still feel uncomfortable and weird about it... mostly numb... very few times angry... most of the times confused and unsure of myself…Well, My Darling, I was simply trying to respond to what I felt that I was “hearing” as you made mention of your relationship, several times. So, I (as we say) “stuck my toe into the water” to discover if it felt like a welcoming place. And, I can assure you that I am speaking with a loving whisper, and listening with a tender ear, to your reluctant speaking of these unhappy times for you. So, I hope that you feel a tiny bit more comfortable with my presence in this place with you. I think that all of those emotions are completely natural … and appropriate … for this time. But I am made more sure of that because Alecia phoned as I was thinking about you today … so (and I do hope that you do not mind) I told her about your kind remarks about her … and read the things that you wrote about her being a really strong and optimistic person, and from what u've told me I truly admire her... She must have been through hell and came out alive and proud. Your words made her feel very good. Then she asked for more about you. So, I read this Email from you to her. And as I did, she said “Yes!! Oh Yes!! That’s EXACTLY how I feel too.” many times. Her 1st husband (and the father of her 3 children) is an alcoholic (just as her mother is.) And then she marries this guy that made all sorts of “romantic demonstrations” when they dated. But I read between the lines of his behavior and through his language and actions … and I knew that he was merely setting her up to take advantage of her. “But it is so good when it is good, Dad!” she would say (over and over again.) “I know that I can teach him to change in all of those other areas as he accepts the reality that I do love him and want the best for him.” Alas … he was, indeed, just manipulating her to get her to commit to marriage because he believed that, once married, he could abuse her (and her children) with foul language and physical abuses. So, as I shared your pain with her, she said again and again “Yes!, Yes!.” She agreed, with you, and me, that the 3 of us would enjoy time shared with each other [smile].

She, like you, was inclined to translate the abuses and disrespect of someone else whose motives and intentions are self-centered and all about their own wants and desires, as some sort of earned punishment for her own failings. I am so happy that we have, together, found the beautiful perspective that lifts her far above that dark valley to heights that permit a fuller and more complete vision of the larger picture of life. And she is embracing the truth of her magnificent worth … and enjoying the hell out of it!! [grin.] And you, My Precious Maria, are no less marvelous a young woman! Please believe me in this. For,, you see, I am not so noble and generous that I would allow my Self to be so completely captivated and enchanted by ANYONE who might be of any lesser qualities. I am VERY discriminating with my affections!

So, Maria, when you say I'm drained but I have to go on and smile and pick me up because I owe it to my parents and to everyone who believes in me… I can reassure you that you should most certainly be drained. You are, after all, a mortal and finite Human Being with defined and realistic limitations in emotional resources and energies. And you have had your Self subjected to a very long, unrelenting period of demands on all of those resources. So, to be “drained” is appropriate, indeed. And it is lovely, noble, and speaks of the beautiful Character that is the core of your being, that you want to restore your complete Self for the benefit of your Parents and all of those others who believe in you. BUT … first … you have a responsibility to that marvelous creation and magnificent Being that is … MARIA. She is so worthy of all of you. She is so wanting to know and appreciate all that you can discover about your talents, abilities, desires, and appetites. She has only You to rely on to meet her needs. And when you do that … when you care for YOU, and respectfully respond to your particular inclinations and designs … then (and ONLY then) Maria can be all that all of those who surround you and rely on you want and need. This is how the order of living priorities works best. And I am her for and with you all of the way … each baby step of the way. Because I do (as I have for these years now) love you.

I have said a lot here. But it is but a small drop in the bucket compared to the river of feeling that I have with it. (So you are very fortunate that I am exercising discipline in sparing you any more reading [grin]). I do hope that this note finds you having a moment of “Happy.” I want so much to bring that to you …

Loving you endlessly,
Your Forever Friend, John-Michael

Transparency

The Transparent Butterfly

I was , recently, given the gift of a group of photographs of a butterfly. “Not so remarkable.” you might say. But my, oh my, you would be so very wrong My Friend. For, you see, this particular butterfly is devoid of any colorful markings. No spectacular hues adorn its wings atall. For this creature is blessed with transparent wings. That’s right! His (or her… as the case may well be) wings are outlined with the barest of borders giving just a brief splash of decoration in the form of a small white feathery-looking mark against a brown background that forms the exterior edge of each wing. Just enough to remind one of the intricacy of Life’s design capabilities while not detracting from the lace-like frame-work supporting the entirety of the wing. Thusly, this creature highlights the beauty of every surface upon which it settles (including the fingertip holding it in one of the photos.) None of the vibrant colors of the garden in which this marvel of nature travels is obscured by its presence… only highlighted. And that Voice within me speaks in response.
“This is you… in your world.” And I am immediately and clearly mindful of the significance of the message illustrated by the butterfly. For this is, indeed, my place in my world. To go about seeing to the needs of the blossoms and blooms in this, my personal corner of Life’s garden. And to do so as I am placed and impressed to do and in the order and method appropriate to each set of particular requirements for that individual’s healthy development and growth. All the while to maintain a transparency that permit’s the showing forth of each Creation’s glory and excellence by maintaining personal obscurity. To those who do take a passing notice of me, it is my place to present only a sufficient framework of evident design necessary to reinforce the understanding of the perfect symmetry and form of Life’s constant control and timing. Mine is not to be the resplendent bouquet of the totality of the garden… but to transparently see to my minuscule contribution for the betterment of those with whom I have occasion to make contact. And how I do savour my role!
Yes… all of this from the image of a butterfly. Remember, My Dear Friend, that there is a wealth of insight to all who will simply “Be still and know…”

I remain, as always, your faithful Friend and Servant,
John-Michael/ 28 March 2006
